Chapter 20

I’m caught in a tangle of strings and nothing I do unravels the wires. Everything seems to get worse and more complicated with every step I take and discovery I make. I don’t know what to think, what to feel, or what to expect. Who knew a school could be this complicated?

I spent the entire weekend in my room trying to find anything online about the Dynasty of Golden Bay, but there is nothing that I can relate to the recruitment. I remembered Julian telling me that there is money involved in this, but I didn’t give it much relevance and can’t remember his exact words.

I stare at the notebook where I logged everything I could find about the Dynasty. It’s become obvious that everyone outside the Dynasty doesn’t know what the Dynasty’s true purpose is. Until then, the most I can do is try to put some pieces of the puzzle together.

At the sound of the last bell, I pack my things, and attentive to all sides, I rush out. Some even run to get out. They are right to do so. Today has been hell for some and the rest of the school picked up that bully season has started.

Once I step out of the building, there is a gathering outside and sheets of paper are blowing everywhere. The front garden of the school is submerged in white. I shield my eyes with my hands and look up. There is a girl on the fourth floor hurling the papers with the help of a fan. As more students leave the school and come to face with the scene, they pick up the papers and read them.

“What’s this about?” I ask a boy, leaning by the wall watching the mess.

“Some girl found another girl’s diary and printed it out.” He shrugs. “It has some intense confessions.”

“Seriously?”

“Yeah.”

“Aren’t you going to have a look?”

“Nah! The important things are in the school paper. Those are copies of the original diary.” He pushes away from the wall. “I better get going, who knows who the next victim will be.”

Shaking my head, I brisk walk to the bus station before I’m late for my first day of work.

Twenty minutes later I’m at the club. I catch a glimpse of the glimmering sign high above the front entrance. Royal is written in gold letters on a white background and a crown sits on top of the R.

I’m excited and expectant as I write my name on the logbook. After the security clearance, I’m allowed inside the club. Holding on to the straps of my backpack, I across the lawn. The club is huge with several small buildings around the complex. After wandering for five minutes, I assume I took a wrong turn because Paul’s office is nowhere in sight. Growling, I retract to go back to the front gate. They should consider putting up maps around here because the next thing I know, I’m close to the youth hall and I’m sure the admin building isn’t this side nor is the front gate.
